Shelly had been walking for what seemed like days before she finally gave into her aching legs and sat down. She had been following the stars as her Aunt Castaway had instructed her to but now she wasn't quite sure in which direction she was going in. Shelly lay her head on the crunchy fall leaves and tried to remember something about her past that could give her hope. But instead of good memories coming to mind, she could only remember the horrible ones.
A time when she was only a pup flashed through her memory. Her and her mother were going somewhere. They were making their way through a clearing. Then she could see a male; her father. They were giving her over to her Aunt Castaway. She could see them walking away, leaving her. Why were they leaving her? She wanted to call out to them, tell them not to leave her, but she knew it was too late.
Not really knowing what she was doing, Shelly let out a loud howl. "Why?" She called out, as if her mother and father's spirits were still floating above the earth and they could hear her. Letting out another long, loud howl, Shelly hoped that somebody, whether near or far, would hear her and come to her rescue.
