I prefer tampons because it'll pretty much catch all of the blood. Plus, in my opinion, they feel more comfortable (not like diapers) and it's easier to do sport activities with them than pads. I usually get store brand, because hey, they work just fine. You may want to do some research though if you have a heavy flow. If all else, talk to your doctor about it.
Periods don't hurt, necessarily, but cramps can be painful. If it gets bad, take an ibuprofen. However, if you maintain a good diet and get exercise, your cramps won't be as bad.

It'd also be in your best interest to take an iron supplement (or a woman's vitamin) when you're on your period to avoid anemia!
Also, you guys are really young, but if you have problems during your period, you could always ask your doctor to subscribe to a form of birth control. Having had hormonal problems since I started puberty, I was put on the pill at age 14. (18 now.) Some birth control will allow you to skip a few months for the next period. (just be careful if you're, you know, not mistaking that for pregnancy. With the pill, it is normal for this to happen and some doctors even think it's better for you, but if you have doubts, take a test.) If you have heavy flow, birth control will definitely help with that as well, along with acne and any other hormonal issues.
