Yup, you were. But even by doing it the right way it can still take some time...some people found their shiny after a chain of 10, while others had to go through a chain of 200, depends on your luck. Of course having the shiny charm helps a lot :)

Hordes also have a higher chance for shinies to appear so you may try that as well :) Congrats for your Cacnea anyways ^^

The problem is that you run away, when DexNav chaining you must either defeat or capture the pokemons you run into or the chain will break. Use a repel because if you run into an encounter not triggered by the dexnav the chain is broken. Other that that, arm yourself with patience and may luck...
