Yes, I think a movie would be good.

You could say "Hey *boys name* would you like to go see a movie with me this weekend?" And if he says yes, then you can proceed to choose what movie, theatre, and time you want to see it.

Well talking to him in private is a good bet to avoid embarassment from others. As long as you aren't begging the guy on your knees to date him, I don't think you'll look desperate

For a date, why not do something you both like to do?
