Tsuno watched as the other fairies fluttered about, leaving pixie dust behind. Tsuno wasn't like that. She didn't fly about, leaving sparkly dust everywhere. She was different. Instead, she sat down quietly and wrote down what she saw in her notebook. Her pixie dust was so dull and it was very hard to notice. Tsuno didn't know why, but none of the other fairies talked to her much. In fact, the last time she talked with another fairy was four years ago, with her best friend Emilee. That same year, Emilee caught a very bad disease and died. Tsuno was depressed and stayed balled up in a small area, writing in her notebook, with not a trace of pixie dust.
Maybe this is why, Tsuno thought as she put down her pen, the other fairies don’t talk to me. She sighed and put her pen in the spiral of her notebook. Thinking about Emilee hurt her head and made her dizzy. She stood up and walked instead of flying. This is another problem with poor old Tsuno. After Emilee’s death Tsuno became very weary and depressed, she tried to work her wings… but they wouldn’t allow her to fly. She walked and bounced from flower to flower being careful not to fall. This was a big problem, because most fairy jobs required fairies to be able to fly. Maybe I can be an artist instead…, she thought as she almost tripped and fell down from the petal she was on.
Now Tsuno just wanted to turn off her mind and stop thinking about horrible things. Yes, this is exactly why the fairies don’t speak to me, she sighed, I’m always thinking about the negatives and never the positives. She watched every step she made and when she finally reached her small beaten-up shack near the pond she threw off her messenger bag and tossed it to the floor. Tsuno also lived by herself. Mostly because her dad is busy working as hard as he can. Tsuno’s mother had been murdered the night Tsuno accidentally left her window open. It was my entire fault… There were those negative thoughts again.
Tsuno shut the door, locked it, made sure all the windows were locked, and went up to the attic. Ah, what memories. In the attic treasures from long ago went kept. Memories of her mother, Emilee, and herself were all kept in here. Tsuno opened a photo album that said “Private Album- Only to be viewed by the eyes of the Stowers.” She opened the book and it almost seemed like… magic. Was she dreaming? Tsuno rubbed her eyes and figured it was all in her head. But…it was magic! I saw it! She viewed all the pictures of her mother and sighed. Those were the days.
Tsuno’s mother and her looked nothing alike. Her mother had golden-blonde hair that fell down her back. Tsuno had short black hair. Her mother’s eyes were as blue as a swimming pool. Tsuno’s eyes were pitch black. Her mother had beautiful tan skin. Tsuno had pale white skin. They were nothing alike.
While rummaging through a box, Tsuno found a small box with rainbows and ballet dancers on it. She tried to open it, but alas, the box had a lock. The key must be somewhere… Tsuno looked at one of the pictures of her mom and saw a key around her neck… a key that was small enough to fit into the lock… the box’s key. How shall I ever open this box if it’s over my dead mother’s neck… Tsuno thought about it and then went to the question, “I wonder what’s in it…” She shook the box around and could hear something small… and she could hear papers rubbing together! Maybe some important information…
Tsuno spent awhile thinking about what could be in that box and went downstairs. She opened her drawers and grabbed her mirror. Tsuno definitely did not look like her mother. Then, out of the corner of her eye, Tsuno spotted a small gleaming sliver object… A key! Was it true? Was it the silver key? Tsuno dropped the mirror and ran to the gleaming object. I-It’s the key! My mother’s key! I have to find that box and see what’s inside! She grasped the key in her hand and ran upstairs. The box was sitting on a stack of papers. Probably bills. Tsuno grabbed the box and flung it to the floor. She took the key and fit it inside the lock… and turned it…and turned it… and click! The box opened! Tsuno could’ve sworn she saw the magic light again… oh well, no matter. There was a small book and a necklace with a symbol imprinted on it. Tsuno put down the symbolic necklace and opened the book with no title. She read out loud,
“This book will solve all your problems and needs… but you must be aware of the consequences or you will get in deep trouble… I wonder what that means…” She flipped the page and kept reading, “This book will stop time, reveal secrets and…” Before she could continue a small paper dropped out of the back. Maybe a letter from my mother… Yes, she was exactly right. She read what was on her mother’s letter.
“Dear Tsuno,
You’re probably grown up enough to see this book, so I left my key by your room. This book will not revive me from my death, but in fact kill others. It’s to be used wisely and if you are overpowered you shall die too. The second you read the phrase on page two you shall have this power… I warned you once and I will not warn you again… don’t be overpowered and use your skill wisely. I wish I could come back but I can’t. Emilee’s doing well. If at anything you want to visit me, at the strike of twelve repeat the chant on page seven. Good luck with your task. And remember the ten deadly words…
With love,
Mama.”
I-Is it possible? How could this be…? This letter must had just been written because the paper has a new smell and the ink is still wet… but how is it possible that Mama wrote me letters from the dead? My head hurt more than ever now. That’s when I spotted a drop of blood on the book. My blood? Yes, from a small paper cut. No wait... not small, big! It was so big my whole hand was bleeding! I panicked and washed off my hand. No marks… strange… What was happening to Tsuno?
