That is an excellent idea. I don't have any extra tennis balls or similar here...my dog is way too small for those...but I'm going to pick some up at the store tomorrow. The chicken waterers are not shaped so I can use balls in them, but the duck and goose pools are perfect for that. And, they wll get a kick out of bobbing them around in the daytime.sorry to go off topic, but does it help if you put a small ball (like a mini tennis ball or super bounce ball) in the waterers? The balls float around during the night and cut down the amount of ice that is able to form on the surface![]()
(It works for fish ponds in the UK - with an old tennis ball)
Notes, I like the snow here too, but it seems like we get the wet, icy, cruddy stuff more often. :/ We just got about an inch of snow the other day here, and it was really pretty, but we are looking at ice/freezing rain next week.

Pikachu Lover, all the birds have houses to go into in bad weather and at night. Ducks and geese share a cozy, fully enclosed coop and the different groups of chickens have 3 separate warm coops. In snow/rain, the chickens don't like to come out, so I leave the door open for them in case they want to, but I put their food and water inside so they have everything they need. Ducks and geese have the option to go into their coop whenever they want, but they prefer to stay outside in the worst weather. They are tough birds! Even when the wind is blowing and the ground is covered in snow they just run around doing their ducky thing. If they get cold feet, they just fluff up, lay down, and sleep awhile to warm up. ^_^ They do get closed in at night, though, mainly for protection against wild animals.
