Tap... tap... tap... Her shoes shuffled against the pavement, cold, wet, dirty. The water seeped into the holes, causing her to shiver, but she pushed on, pulling her worn trench coat tighter around her thin frame. As hard as she tried, she could not remember the feeling of hot soup going down her throat, or a warm embrace. Things from her past had long been forgotten. But perhaps it was better that way. It numbed the pain from the years before. How long had it been? Two... no, maybe three years. All she knew was that she was currently 18, going on nineteen.
