What sword are you talking about exactly? The one you get in the very beginning or the master sword? To get your first sword when you are Wolf Link, you have to go to the house near the hill that's by the river. Get around the dude with the oil lamp. Go around the house and turn on your senses. Dig and you'll get into the house. On the couch will lie the sword. Pick it up.

To get the master sword, you have to get to the sacred meadow...It's complicated. Use a walk-through for that one.
