In short, positive karma is gained by being helpful and sticking to the rules, and usually takes a while. Negative karma is gained by breaking the rules even after several warnings from the guides. As for its purpose, think of it as rewards and punishment. It also gives people an idea about the behavior of the member.

That's pretty much correct. I'd also like to mention that negative karma is not gained by simply not being very pleasant; it's only gained by directly breaking the rules. However positive karma IS awarded for being friendly and polite, not just for following the rules. Karma is given based on your current behaviour and behaviour over the last year or so; what you've done in the long run may have no effect on your current karma. Also, karma can and often does change (especially when it's negative), but not usually by more than one point.

I still haven't been "evaluated" or anything for karma yet. But to have good karma stick to the rules and dont swear and things like that. Good karma= good reputation. Bad karma =PUBLIC HUMILIATION! everyone sees. :D

I never "evaluate" any member. Just notice when members seem to get along with others, are helpful, keep out of flame wars even when someone else is being rude or mean... there's not an official "evaluation".

Of course... it's always easier to get peoples' attention by being rude or mean ... and so it's probably easier to earn negative karma for breaking site rules... but if you feel that negative karma is publicly humiliating the best bet would be to avoid any behaviour on TamaTalk / TamaCHAT that earns it :p

Also, there is no set time in which you can get karma. You can get it 1 month from the day you joined or 5 years after.
