Is this safe...

[SIZE=8pt]Hello Tamatalkers! I just went to the pet store yesterday and baught some shampoo for my hamsters... it's called Pet Scentsations Premium Small Animal Shampoo and it's for all small animals... it even has a picture of a hamster on it! These are the directions: [/SIZE]

 

1. wet coat with warm water pour shampoo along pet's back.

 

2. work shampoo into coat, avoid eyes and ears

 

3. thoroughly rinse coat

 

4. shampoo again

 

5. thoroughly rinse coat until water runs clear with no suds

 

I read somewhere that you shouldn't give a hamster a bath because it can give them a disease called 'wet tail' and they could die. but this shampoo says you can. I wanted to know if it was safe to give my hamster a bath with this stuff =)

please help?

Well, if it's available on the shelves of the pet store, then it must be good. I don't think the owner or manager or whatever would put a product that isn't worth buying, much less giving your hamster a chance of catching a disease.

I think you should try it.\But if you're still not sure, ask your parents. If you're still not sure, go back to the pet store and ask, or you can go to the vet and get the ok from them.

[SIZE=14pt]DON'T. Wet Tail is a contagous diease(If you have currently more than one), my hamster, Lucky, gets it almost EVERY MONTH. (I don't know what caused it). You should only bathe a hammy if it has a poisonous lquid on the fur. If you want to Bathe your hammy, buy hamster sand(Or chincilla sand..) Go on WikiHow for more info. [/SIZE]

Ohhh no. Do not use that. There is so much unsafe stuff at pet stores it's crazy. Get chinchilla sand.

Only bathe your small animals if they are dirty. Not just, oh, he hasn't had a bath, but he is literally covered in mud or something. They have some wipes at the petstore that are safe to use on pets. If you do end up giving him a bath, make sure to dry him extremely, extremely well.

I think if you don't fully dry a hamster or gerbil, they can get sick, especially if they live in a glass tank. Make sure to dry it very well.... BUT DON'T USE A HAIR DRYER!!! Unless your hair dryer has a button for cooler air (not too cold but not too hot) then maybe you can use it, but I'd rather dry it with a dry towel.

I've used shampoo on my hamsters before. I've used Small Animal Shampoo before like your thinking about using, and Baby Human Shampoo too. As long as you don't get it in any sensitive parts like in the eyes or nose, it should be fine. You need to make sure there is no soap left though, it might cause skin irritation...but I'm not 100% sure. Hamster Shampoo makes them smell clean and fresh.

If you follow the directions carefully, it will all be terrific! You don't need much shampoo, you just need a good lather and rinse...and voila!

Not true.

Pet stores still sell Greenies, which a few dogs have choked on and died. They sell this certain beef jerky for dogs that has given dogs, including one of my own seizures. Toys for birds that are lethal and/or unsafe. Even cages that aren't considered safe.

Just because in a pet store, doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Hamsters clean themselves o.o' I don't think there's even a need for them to have a bath to be honest.
