A good way to pause tamas without stunting growth (and v1-3 and V5 a cheat for getting good characters) is called "sleep mode". Go to the clock and set the time to when the tama is asleep, preferably 12:00 AM. When it's done pausing, you easily set the time back to the real time. It works, continues growth, prevents hearts from stopping, and is neat.

The point of this whole tip for pausing was that it doesn't use any battery. That would, in theory, make your battery last longer. While I would never do it, it does seem like a good way to keep your Tama from dying without taking up any battery.
