Mine used to die all the time before I discovered the matchmaker. I was a total Tama-Noob then and I pretty much had no idea how they worked. When I saw the matchmaker come on the screen for the first time I was all "lolwhut?" and so I pushed a button. "Love? Yes/No" came on the screen. I figured it just meant that I was saying "i love you" to my pet, but when another character came on the screen and fireworks started crackling, I waited to see what would happen next. When a baby appeared on the screen, I completely spazzed. I ran around the house shouting "I JUST MADE IT HAVE A BABY. OH MY GOD!" xD
Since then, no Tamagotchis under my care have died. I've been pretty good about taking care of them, though I have come close to killing them at some points. Mostly when I forgot to pause them before leaving for school or when I slept in really late and was awoken by their beeps of distress.
