Do both Tamagotchis have to be adults to be listed as "best friends" or even "lovers"?

I've connected Jack and Delia and a bunch of times, and they each have four little faces, but Jack is a Gozarutchi and Delia is only a Hintotamatchi (he's a stage ahead).

What should I expect?

Yeah, they both have to be on the "Lovers" level to mate. Just keep connecting them and they'll eventually mate. You'll have to wait until each of your Tamagotchis are at least 24 hours into their Breeding/Adult stage before they will mate.

when they have 4 hearts they will be able to mate of course they must be 7 though on v2s it will look different because they age every 24 hours instead of when they wake up so basically 2 days after
