I have a side question, this is going to sound ridiculous to most of you, I'm sure, but can these depression medications be addicting?

I'm not going to a therapist yet, mind you, but if something can be prescribed for this I'd be more than willing to take it, as long as there's no chance of addiction.

Basically, if it's mood altering, or it's potentially addictive, I'm not allowed to take it, but I'm not sure how these things work.

For the most part, this is what anti-depressants do - they alter your mood and they are potentially addictive.

Not everyone reacts to anti-depressants in the same way - you can see that even from this small sample of replies - and not everyone gets addicted - but there are plenty of confirmed addictions.

Many doctors in the UK prefer to try alternative therapies - counselling, etc. and avoid the anti-depressants.

Personally, I think we need to avoid a culture where we think we can cure our ills with meds and try to look more closely at cause.

If you don't fix the problem then anti-depressants may only give you temporary relief and the danger is that you will fall into deeper depression if you come off them without fixing the cause of the depression.

Ha, well crap.

There's a story behind that, but that belongs to a completely different topic.

...

I took them.

They helped me with depression and panic/anxiety attacks.

I still have panic attacks, but it's not as frequent or bad enough for me to be on medication.

When I first started taking them, I was experiencing a side effect. Memory loss.

I had to switch to a different medication and that worked a lot better than the first one.

I think Doctors are too careless when handing them out. It seems everyone who goes in with the slightest bit of anxiety comes out loaded up with drugs. I think the doctors would rather shut people up, than spend the time solving what's wrong.

(I understand this isn't always the case and I do agree that some people need them. I have friends who are on them and it has improved their lives, but I've also heard some pretty bad stories)
