I know alot about autism, and since I've met so many people who discriminate others because they have autism and they think they're retarted or something because of that, I feel like I should tell others about it.
autism occurs 1 in 110 children, and 1 in 70 boys. the causes are unknown, but some theories say that it's genetic, and it has to do with genetic and environmental factors. there are many types of autism. there currently is no cure for it, but in my opinion you can cure yourself by trying hard enough to understand people, I know from experience.
I know about high-functioning autism (aspergers syndrome) most, so I'll explain what it's like to have it.
imagine yourself going to a new, unknown planet. when you get there, everyone behaves so strangely, and when they talk normal, you hear it as them shouting. you understand the words people are saying, but they don't make any sense. and some things you think are hillarious, others may not think are funny at all. you look for a guide book of the planet, and find out that you forgot to bring it. so, you have no clue what you're sapposed to say to others, or how to engage in a conversation. (for me, it's like there's so many different words and so many different types of conversations that I can't figure out what words are sapposed to be used.) then, you may find one thing that you're really interested in, and you have to know all about it. (let's use art, for example.) and because you're all into art, you may become a famous artist. (or if you like science, you could be a scientist, and so on.) eventually, you might just learn how to interact with people, but it'll be very hard. you'll always feel a bit different though. (here's a video explanation of it. I know it's from a little kids show, but it's the eaisiest-to-understand explanation I've heard, and the best. the explanation is at 00:27 seconds to 2:29 seconds.)
the following are symtoms of autism:
~nonverbal communication (you can't talk)
~unable to look directly at the person you're talking to
~unable to make friends with people your own age
~unable to understand others feelings
~learning to speak later in life (some never speak)
~has trouble starting a conversation, and has trouble keeping the conversation going
~repeats a word or phrase over and over
~dificulty understanding what someone means
~does not know how to play with toys (for example, instead of brushing a doll's hair, you may think you're sapposed to line them up instead)
~must have a routine everyday (example: must always drink milk before eating a sandwich, must always take the same route to go somewhere)
~unusual movement (such as spinning or rocking back and forth)
there are lots of rumors going around about people like albert einstien or michael jackson have autism, but the truth is that we'll never know. unless you're thier doctor and you've spoken to them, it's just impossible to know if a dead person has autism. in order to diagnose someone, you have to talk to them.
now that that's been settled, there is one person with autism that I know of who has written several books about it, was the creator of many humane farm machines, and has a movie about her. her name is temple grandin. the movie will be released on august 17, but I got to see it early on HBO family. it is a very great movie, very funny, informative, and inspirational. I highly reccomend watching it. please look up her books too, they are very interesting. (another book you should read: all cats have aspergers syndrome. I have that book and I read it all the time)
This is the website for autism speaks, an organization for autism. I'm hoping to get involved with the advocation for autism, and I might even start events to support the search for the cure. I really hope you get involved, too. I hope you've learned a bit about autism now, and understand it.
if you do know about autism or know anyone that has it, please talk about your experiences. (I think you've figured out by now that I have autism...)
