I know alot about autism, and since I've met so many people who discriminate others because they have autism and they think they're retarted or something because of that, I feel like I should tell others about it.

autism occurs 1 in 110 children, and 1 in 70 boys. the causes are unknown, but some theories say that it's genetic, and it has to do with genetic and environmental factors. there are many types of autism. there currently is no cure for it, but in my opinion you can cure yourself by trying hard enough to understand people, I know from experience.

I know about high-functioning autism (aspergers syndrome) most, so I'll explain what it's like to have it.

imagine yourself going to a new, unknown planet. when you get there, everyone behaves so strangely, and when they talk normal, you hear it as them shouting. you understand the words people are saying, but they don't make any sense. and some things you think are hillarious, others may not think are funny at all. you look for a guide book of the planet, and find out that you forgot to bring it. so, you have no clue what you're sapposed to say to others, or how to engage in a conversation. (for me, it's like there's so many different words and so many different types of conversations that I can't figure out what words are sapposed to be used.) then, you may find one thing that you're really interested in, and you have to know all about it. (let's use art, for example.) and because you're all into art, you may become a famous artist. (or if you like science, you could be a scientist, and so on.) eventually, you might just learn how to interact with people, but it'll be very hard. you'll always feel a bit different though. (here's a video explanation of it. I know it's from a little kids show, but it's the eaisiest-to-understand explanation I've heard, and the best. the explanation is at 00:27 seconds to 2:29 seconds.)

the following are symtoms of autism:

~nonverbal communication (you can't talk)

~unable to look directly at the person you're talking to

~unable to make friends with people your own age

~unable to understand others feelings

~learning to speak later in life (some never speak)

~has trouble starting a conversation, and has trouble keeping the conversation going

~repeats a word or phrase over and over

~dificulty understanding what someone means

~does not know how to play with toys (for example, instead of brushing a doll's hair, you may think you're sapposed to line them up instead)

~must have a routine everyday (example: must always drink milk before eating a sandwich, must always take the same route to go somewhere)

~unusual movement (such as spinning or rocking back and forth)

there are lots of rumors going around about people like albert einstien or michael jackson have autism, but the truth is that we'll never know. unless you're thier doctor and you've spoken to them, it's just impossible to know if a dead person has autism. in order to diagnose someone, you have to talk to them.

now that that's been settled, there is one person with autism that I know of who has written several books about it, was the creator of many humane farm machines, and has a movie about her. her name is temple grandin. the movie will be released on august 17, but I got to see it early on HBO family. it is a very great movie, very funny, informative, and inspirational. I highly reccomend watching it. please look up her books too, they are very interesting. (another book you should read: all cats have aspergers syndrome. I have that book and I read it all the time)

This is the website for autism speaks, an organization for autism. I'm hoping to get involved with the advocation for autism, and I might even start events to support the search for the cure. I really hope you get involved, too. I hope you've learned a bit about autism now, and understand it.

if you do know about autism or know anyone that has it, please talk about your experiences. (I think you've figured out by now that I have autism...)

I'm not very familiar with autism. I don't have it, nor do I know anyone who has it. I can't say I really knew about any of the stuff you just mentioned, but I do feel enlightened after reading about it. :)

I have austistic tendencies, which means I am very sensitive to light and sound.

My best freind's brother is Autistic. But to me, he's just like a normal person. I still don't know very much about Autism and I'm glad you've posted this so others can learn about it.

Autism isn't really that bad ( I have aspergers) I think that video was exagerating about how different they feel.

But thanks for letting others know, Most people i meet think it's some kind of disease.

Thank you for posting this.

It just goes to show how little I knew about Autism and Aspergers. I can't honestly say that I've met someone with Autism, but I wish I did. No matter if they have Autism or some other mental handicap, people shouldn't treat them differently. Those people are still capable of doing great things and becoming great people, even more than some people without mental handicaps.

Ah, I'm going to shut up now. Once again, thanks for posting this.

I know quite a bit about Autism and Aspergers as I have Aspergers, but it is amazing to see how much I didn't know. Also, the website says 1 in 110 children not 1 in 100.

When I tell people I have Aspergers Syndrome, they just ask "What's that?"

I didn't know about Aspergers until I started watching Criminal Minds. I became attached to a character (Dr Reid) and researched him. It said he had Aspergers, so when I researched Aspergers, it came up with minor form of autism. Aspergers isn't really something you'd notice unless you spent a LOT of time with that person. People with Aspergers just think differently to others, and there is nothing wrong with that at all, and is in fact the reason that they are so capable.

I support people who have autism. My nephew might have autism. He has speech problems, and other symptoms like that. The doctors say he's to young for a test, but they pretty much know he's going to have it. And a person at my school Died. He had it. So I never make fun of that. It's not a laughing matter.

I dobut Michael Jackson had autism I mean look at his past! Moonwalk, robot, houses, children oh and the antigravity.

If you ever read the book "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime", the main character has autism (I think.) The thing is, some people with autism do amazingly well with school subjects. The main character was excellent at math and brain puzzles. His social skills were what autism affected.

Thank you for putting up this information, it's really useful and informational.

Oh, and there's a Snapple Tea flavor called "Compassionberry Tea". The flavor was actually inspired by the HollyRod foundation, which helps families who have members with autism to get affordable treatment and care.

I know 2 people that have autism. one has a really hard time at everything and one is just mildly autism.

I still remember one time in year 2 where you have to guess what color was missing. It was purple. the teacher said p - p - p

and he said:

p - p - porridge

and he had weet-bix for breakfast.

i'm deadly serios!even about the weet-bix! (his mum said)

I don't want to be rude, but autism actually occurs 1 in 110 kids.

While autism is a serious subject, scientists have broadened the definition of autism because more children would be clearly diagnosed, and know we're surprised that the rate has gone up. When I see an autistic kid who's just...normal. Like, really. Completely normal- I feel bad for the people that actually do have autism. I believe it was Jenny McCarthy who had a child diagnosed with autism. Then, she gave him some antibiotics and he pooed a lot, and then he became better. It's sad.
