The battery orientations may not be exactly the same as Penguin keeper's. Try swapping them around, make sure you're not missing any metal contacts. Then try cleaning the corrosion off with alcohol or vinegar.

If you're talking about connection models, always go for a real tamagotchi, the fakes are disappointing. If you're talking about fake tamagotchis, rather than tamagotchi alternatives, I've heard that the Qpet/+color fake is decent.

Ps has so much content (and a you get a bonus fried egg pierce with it!). Can't say I have any experience with the 4U+ though.
