"Coming, Mother!" yelled a rushed Blueberry as she made her way down the carpeted stairs, two at a time, to the front door, where her faithful mum, Mrs. B.Berry, was waiting to take Blueberry to her first day in 6th grade.
"Have you got everything, Bluey, dear?" asked her mother, rummaging through her bag to put her lunch in her lunch-pack (a berrylicious feast of wild berries!) As she walked out of the family's great oak door, Blueberry said "Mother, I really can't have you here ruining my first day at Berryville High! You're just so embarrasing!"
And with that, Blueberry ran out the door and down her garden path to meet her best friend, Gooseberry.
"Blueberry!!!" yelled Gooseberry, as she rushed out to hug her friend! "Oh, Goosey, I hope you've had a wonderful Summer! I know I have!" The two talked for a while, as good companions do, as they walked up to the familiar walls of Berryville High.
Then suddenly Gooseberry stopped. "Oh, Bluey, I forgot to tell you!"
"What did you forget to tell me? Oh, dear goodness, please don't tell me we're being taught by Mrs. Pumpernickle again? I was so looking forward to Miss Cottonbell!"
Gooseberry laughed, "Oh no, Bluey, Miss Cottonbell is our tutor for this year; I am sure of that. It's just that...oh, I hate to say it! Strawberry's joined our class!"
Bluey stopped dead in her tracks. "Oh, Goosey, not that awful girl from Berry Brigade! She simply torments me! I cannot have her ruining school for me too!" Blueberry was suddenly distraught. At Berry Brigade, Strawberry had always come above her, to her friends and teachers.
You see, Strawberry had everything. She was beautiful and perfect in everything she did. Her eyes shone with achievement and her skin was a lovely strawberry-red. The green sprouts on her head were always brushed to perfection, and she excelled in everything. Berry was kind and good to everyone, but she was not as much of a beauty as she was a kind heart. Strawberry was the opposite. Beautiful and seemingly perfect, she had a deceitful heart. And Blueberry knew it.
As Blueberry and Gooseberry turned the corner, there was Strawberry. She looked at Blueberry and smiled a sweet and sickly smile. "Hello, Blueberry!" she said, quite innocently. If one didn't know Strawberry, one would suppose they were friends.
