If when you get the opportunity to choose a job, you take too long deciding and the window dissapears, don't bother waiting about for the postman to come again, just set the time backwards slightly (to around when you got the letter) and the letter will come through again.
Also, if there is an item you want in the shop but your tama goes to sleep before you have enough points to buy it, set the time backwards again. This gives you a chance to buy the item before the re-stock in the morning.
As far as I'm aware setting the time backwards neither slows or speeds the growth of the v4 tamas.
