Training. My bar is always low.

I know that when the tama calls and it doesnt need anything you tell it off and you get 1 training point.

I read that when you get great on a game you should praise them and you will get 1 training point. I have done this and it didn't work.

What ways are there of boosting my training level?

Praising them after getting great on a game doesn't seem to work for me either. There are 2 ways to increase training... the first is to punish the tama when he calls but doesn't need anything and is still floating happily on the screen. The second is if he calls you and his back is turned to you or he is crying, then you have to praise him and he will gain one training point. If you get these 2 mixed up and discipline when you're meant to praise, you get no points. They generally call 3 or 4 times a day, so you should have a full training bar after about 3 days.

You know, once I accidently punished my Tamagotchi when I meant to praise him. His training went up, but he was still rather peeved at me (and who can blame him. Oops! )

Also i may add, that when you punish them even if it's the correct situation to punish them, they will lose a happy heart, my cousin who i picked up a connection on the 10th thought he was always doing the wrong thing because it would lose a happy heart when he was punished even though he beebed for no reason, i know it seems pretty obious that they loose happy hearts when they are punished, but for some people who are new to Tamagotchi's it may be questioned. (like my cousin).

my tama doesn't want to play games! what do i do? i tried giving it time out and praising it but it doesn't work.

Try feeding it, if it's at the minnum weight it won't play because they can't be under weight, if you need a better explanation, look in this section, there are currently a few topics on what do do, it's pretty simple.
