Giselle was walking home from school. She stared at her feet. "I just wish that I would never have to go back home again!" she mumbled under her breath. "Everybody in school thinks I'm a total dork!" She stumbled into her mother. "Mom! What are you doing here? Aren't you supposed to be picking up Kaona?" she asked her mother. "Oh, no!" her mother replied in a gentle, hush tone. "She's at your Aunt Sana's. I have to go on a buisness trip and I told your father to meet me here."
She looked at her mother. "So, should I head over there?" Giselle asked. "Yes! Of course! Now there's your father! Goodbye!" she yelled, running over to her car. Giselle forced a smile and waved back at her mother. As soon as the car was gone, she groaned. "Could this day get any worse?!!" she moaned. "First, I tell my crush who is already dating the most popular girl in school that I like him and now I have to go to my wacko aunt's house!"
Now, Giselle really loved her aunt, but she was a little weird. Whenever Giselle and her sister visited Aunt Sana, the lights would be off and she'd put garlic around their necks to keep away the vampires. She would also have them gather around in a circle so they could talk to the dead. Talk about creepy.
But the only two people weirder than her aunt were her cousins. Aunt Sana had a son and a daughter. Her son was a five year old kid named Ran. He just sat around watching TV all day. And it wasn't plugged in! He'd laugh whenever a piece of dust landed on the TV and cry if the girl dust didn't like the boy dust. Giselle tried keeping away from Ran.
Ran's older sister was fifteen, like Giselle. Her name was Yori. She never wore anything but her black skirt and shirt. She had her ears pierced, her nose pierced and her lip pierced. Yori only stayed in her room with the lights off, trying to communicate with the souls of the living dead. Giselle figured Yori was from her aunt's side of the family.
When Giselle walked into the house, her aunt sprayed something into Giselle's face. She sputtered and gasped. "What was that?!" she yelled. "It's to keep evil out of the house!" her aunt said. "Whatever!" Giselle yelled. "I'll be in the guest room!" She ran into the wall as she was heading towards the guest room where she slept. Ran started to laugh and for the first time in Giselle's life, Yori smiled a smile that wasn't a villanous smirk. Tears were in Giselle's eyes. She ran into the guest room and plopped onto her bed.
Her aunt ran after her. "What has been bothering you, hon?" her aunt asked. "From the moment you walked into my humble little home, I sensed that something was bugging you!" Giselle wiped her eyes. "I-I don't know! I just wish I could go somewhere where nobody knew who I was! A world without people laughing at me!" Giselle replied, coarsly. "Just go into the attic and you might find what you need." Aunt Sana said, camly. Giselle looked puzzled and shrugged.
She walked into the hallways and found what she was looking for. She pulled a rope the opened the attic door. It was gleaming as if there was a magical portal to another realm. She climbed up the ladder anxiously, wanting to figure out what was beyond that door. She walked in and disappeared...
