The cruiser was parked in a small bay, ready to depart within ten minutes' time. Several shadowy figures loomed nearby, engrossed in conversation.

"Bronwyn, I'm convinced that what we do is for the good of the future," the shorter man said quietly to the taller one, who seemed on the silent side. "I've no doubt that the Oracle's prophecy was true, and as such, this child MUST be sent away! The future depends on it!"

The taller man said nothing, only turned aside and stared out into the night. A third figure had already approached, a small bundle in his arms. He said something to the shorter man, who nodded and stepped over to the cruiser. He typed in the coordinates and stood back, then walked over to the other man and touched his shoulder.

"I know how you must feel, Bronwyn," he said gently. "I feel just the same as you do about poor Moira. But now she's gone, and we must continue with the plan as we had agreed upon earlier. There's nothing else for it."

The cruiser took off at this point, leaving only a swirly mist where it had been moments ago. The taller man looked at the cloud of dust and shrugged. "Harker can look after my affairs," he said, settling his hat on his head and looking solemn, despite the darkness. "He's done so often enough, as you know, I'm sure. Since Clyde has cut all ties with the family, taking off for who knows where, Harker is the only reliability I have, left. He'll keep the High Council in line."

"I've my doubts about that, but it shall be as you say, Bronwyn. Who am I to disagree with my Emperor, as well as my once brother-in-law? With your leave, I shall resume my own place. The little Mavourneen seems to be safe. Cadence will take her to a place where she can grow up in the best possible environment, you'll see." He bowed and walked away to another cruiser, parked some distance away. He looked up at the darkness before climbing in. "Good fortune be with you, Mavourneen," he said softly, then started up his cruiser and glanced back at the other man, who was walking in the opposite direction.

To be continued.....
