Hello, I'm getting back into the swing of tamagotchi and noticed they have the tamagotchi friends for relatively cheap on Amazon. Is it any good and would you recommend it? My daughter's birthday is coming up amd I was thinking of getting us both one since she is now asking for a tamagotchi. Thank you for your answers.

There are two versions of Tamagotchi Friends, the regular version and the Dream Town version. The two seem to be around 90% the same except the Dream Town version has more games and the formula is more regulated for obtaining characters. I only have the Dream Town version but I did look into getting one of the regular versions, only to realize the Dream Town version seemed the better of the two. Another aspect of the Tamagotchi Friends versions is that there is a website where one can play a simple game and achieve coupons that can be redeemed for items in the physical Tamagotchi. The game can be tedious and repetitive and the codes redeem items that are already available in the Tamagotchi which, coupled with server problems, makes it not worth playing.

Now one of the highlights of the Tamagotchi Friends versions is that it features characters from the modern, colour Tamagotchis. It is also relatively low maintenance, has a high payout from successfully completing games, and also a wide variety of food. Tamagotchis on this version can live forever as adults due to the oldie stage being removed and also due to the Date Place option, marrying them is made easier. The notable cute features of the Tamagotchi Friends is the performances at the Tama Circus (Dream Town version only, the regular version has a park), being able to eat with other tamagotchis at the Music Cafe (Dream Town version only), and the various interactions tamagotchis do when they visit via bumping. There are a few different seasonal changes that affect the background. Also, the birthday animation on the Dream Town version is rather cute.

The negative qualities of the Tamagotchi Friends is that they have removed items and thus instead of being able to watch tamagotchis playing with toys (often in inventive ways), one can collect jewellery. Jewellery mostly takes up space but collecting 30 pieces will unlock a minigame and 60 pieces will unlock another one (which could alternatively be obtained by bumping). The Yumex TV option is simply one animation of characters dancing to music and I seldom use it now as well as the text feature, which becomes rather redundant. Lastly, one rather irksome feature is that throughout the day, the tamagotchis on the Tamagotchi Friends will beep for attention (and persist if not answered) only to express happiness. At first this seems cute but after awhile gets rather irritating that I have started keeping mines on mute.

To sum it up, the Tamagotchi Friends has a variety of modern characters, a few interesting features, and a few that I never use. It still has the basic formula of a Tamagotchi but is a bit lacking in variety. Would I recommend it for you and your daughter? Yes, primarily because it is cheaper than the other versions, is low-maintenance and will be a good introductory model, and I could see you and your daughter having fun with the connection feature. I highly recommend getting the Dream Town version over the regular version due to the extra games and having removed the five-bumps-per-day limit. I would also recommend familiarizing yourself with the pausing and sound off features to keep things practical.

The Tamagotchi Friends Digital Friend & Tamagotchi Friends Dream Town may still be available at Hot Topic & Box lunch stores for around $19.99. The Dream Town version is one of our favorite American releases!
