Tamagotchi Friends/Dream town - can they connect?

So I want to get the first version of the tamagotchi friends and I have a dream town edition, but I'm wondering - can they connect? I don't want to get one unless they can

Yes, they can connect. Instead of Infrared connection they use NFC connection, wherein placing the backs of the devices against each other will connect them. I would heavily recommend the Dream Town version instead of the original friends version because I looked into getting an original version (as I ended up with four Dream Towns) and it appeared that the two devices were 90% the same, the Dream Town version seeming the better of the two.
