Tama m!xes aren't connecting?

I have a 1st gen toddler on a 20th ani, and a 2nd gen teen on a Sanrio one. Everyone makes it looks so easy, but they aren't connecting.

Are you pressing the 'B' button when you set them to connect - after they start the heart-communication symbol bit? You only need to press 'B' on one.
