So I"ve seen the growth charts but is there a hierarchy of what the best characters are or anything. I'm thinking that I have the bottom group and want to do better....

If you go to this link https://www.peppersoup.net/tamasquare/tamapluschara.php it should describe to you their characteristic rankings so you get a rough idea of how characters compare to one another (intelligence levels, etc..)

Tama Hierarchy is dependant on how well you take care of your Tama. Therefore, because you need to take the utmost care with your Tamagotchi, Mimitchi and Mametchi are the "highest ranked."
Lowest ranked would be Maskutchi and Gozarutchi, because to get them, all you have to do is neglect them.
Now, as some people may argue there is no hierarchy dependant on stats, but it is simply dependant on your personal preference (as I may not agree) they are also "right."
