Stig and Dan were best friends. They had their differences though. Stig was intelligent and good with figures and unusual machines and Dan was best at attracting the girls. Despite their differences, they did everything together. One morning they finished a marvellous invention that had taken hours of hard work. Stig had built it while Dan handed him the tools. ‘It’s a lie detector!’ exclaimed Stig. Dan giggled, ‘Let’s try it at school!’ Both Stig and Dan knew exactly who to try it on. Milly, the school wimp was always denying things, and now they would know what was true and what was not!
The next morning in Assembly they presented it in front of the school. ‘This is our new invention,’ Stig shouted proudly. ‘Can we have Milly Barker up here to try it please?’ Dan added. Milly nervously walked up to the front of the hall. ‘Sit down here,’ Dan ordered pointing to an old rickety chair they had placed beside the machine. They strapped a couple of bands to her arm and were soon asking questions. Stig was the first to speak. ‘Do you love anyone?’ She instantly answered with ‘No.’ The knob pointed to ‘Lie.’ ‘What colour eyes do they have?’ Dan asked, trying to make it exciting. ‘Black,’ she replied. The knob pointed to ‘Truth.’ They scowled the hall for people with black eyes. They had suspected Frankie James but he had blue. ‘Who is it?’ Stig whispered to Dan. Dan scanned the room once more. He turned to Stig and his mouth dropped open. ‘It’s you!’ he said, ‘You’re the only person here with black eyes.’ Milly blushed as her secret had been discovered.
