Hm, if you keep trying to feed your tama meals over and over, it will eventually just shake its head "no." It won't get sick from too many candies either, but it MAY get a toothache. Perhaps that's what happened?
Or it could have been in the baby stage. All babies get sick (in my experience, anyway) at least once before they evolve to the second form.
