I was in our car. Our rusty worthless Ford Escort. I didn't know where I was going. I didn't know if Mum did either. She seemed to have some idea. A bigger idea than me. Well at least, she said she knew. Mum said it was a surprise for my birthday but I wasn't sure. A lot of her surprises have turned into nightmares. Last year she had taken me to Alton Towers. I was really looking forward to it, until mum realised she had some names muddled up and we actually were going to Bolton Lowers Museum. The only things there were books. And more books. And a couple of interesting artefacts. They weren't interesting to look at. Just interesting to try and touch without setting the alarm off and alerting the security guard. Another time we went on a train. Mum thought it would take us on a journey past lots of famous landmarks, such as Nelson's Monument (which she didn't realise was in the middle of an industrial estate), and the Shop Tower. That turned out to be a hairdressers with a block of flats on top of. Then there was the The Eiffel Tower, Mum didn't seem to realise that wasn't in the UK. Instead, we went past a building site and the M25. The most unbelievale time by far was the clown. Actually, I'd better not mention that as it did include swearing and violence.
Mum is kind of stupid. She assumes things. She imagines things. She invents things. And I knew that today would be no different, Mum thought it would, but obviously she was wrong, as always.
'So where are we going?' I asked trying to get her to tell me.
'It's a surprise,' said Mum, 'Don't worry though, you'll love it.'
'But Mum, when you've given me surprises you've taken me to a museum, some non-existant landmarks, some scaffolding and the UK's busiest road. Why will this time be differentt?'
Mum paused and thought. 'Look, Megan, I know I've let you down before but this time I have a funny feeling that it might go right.' I knew it wouldn't go right, I just knew it.
'Mum, no offence but nothing ever goes right for you, even when you do have funny feelings,' I replied. I couldn't quite see her face from the front passenger seat but I had a suspicion she was crying. I felt a bit guilty. But I knew it was the truth and you know what people say, the truth hurts even if you do say 'no offence.'
