I crept over to the door to answer it. I stared at the person and glared into her eyes. She had short orange hair. It passed her shoulders a little bit. Her eyes were a pretty orangish-yellow. I stared at her.
She didn’t look like anyone else I new. Was she foreign? Or maybe she was a freak? But then I remember what mama always used to tell me.
‘Mama! That boy has pink hair! Is he weird or something?’ A shocked look came upon my mother’s face, ‘Enni! Never say things about how people look! Inside…people could be sweet…they don’t deserve that sort of talk.”
“Um, excuse me…” she murmured quietly. I snapped back into reality and opened the door wider. “Who are you?” I asked. The girl looked into my eyes and replied, “Kerry…that’s my name… Kerry B”
Kerry B…what an odd name. Melisa leapt out from behind her. “But I call her Shadow! I told you I like to make up nicknames!” she exclaimed. “Yeah, they’re not always good.” Kerry mumbled.
I giggled. Melisa gasped. “Shadow! She smiled! She laughed! She hasn’t done that for two years! She actually smiled!” she shrieked excitedly.
I quickly stopped giggling and hung my head down, trying to control myself. I hadn’t laughed like that for a long time… could it be that Melisa could actually be someone I would like?
The three of us walked to school together. It turns out that Shadow was actually a sixth grader who transferred to my class after moving closer to the school. It turns out she and Melisa had been friends for three years.
I sat in the class thinking. Not about the math problems on the board, but about Melisa and Shadow. Being with them made me feel good inside. Warm, loved…not like before, though.
I constantly hung around with them. In the cafeteria at lunch, on our soccer field at recess, (we never really played soccer though) pretty much everywhere. I stared at the math problem and tried to solve it…but I couldn’t get the thoughts out of my head.
