Is it safe to have a Tama as Debutchi?

I was wondering if when I get a Tamagotchi if it's safe to have a Debutchi since he's really cute. I know he'll die in the old ones but is it different in the new ones?

Debutchi is only on the Mesutchi and Osutchi. A Tama will evolve into one when it becomes overweight. If it doesn't loose weight, it will die the next day.
