IrDA to P's connection troubles

So, I've been searching far and wide on the internet for a solution to my problem, but I've found none.

I recently bought an IrDA dongle to take advantage of those sweet VDPs, but I've encountered a problem. I know the first step in setting up a connection between the computer and the Tamagotchi is to just connect them without sending anything and wait for the "Send files to another computer" icon. However, every single time I connect them the P's just gives me the "failed connection" screen and the icon for sending files never shows up. I've tried like ten times now. I make sure the tamagotchi is positioned just right. What's happening?

The irDA dongles don't work very well and I say this as someone who has the same problem with them. I've had success with having the P's and irDA dongle directly facing each other. Also, you're making sure to select the correct option, I don't remember the actual name sorry, and not the connect to P's option, right.
