How do I get a different Tama Pet in Tamogotchi On?

I keep getting the same purple looking cloud dog even though I keep leaving different items outside. Do I have to do something different in order to get a different pet? I started over and in my last game my tama pet would get married to a bunch of different pets I've never had the option of getting, so I know it's possible. Each time they would get married it would just change my pet's color and not turn into a different pet. Any tips and tricks would be great!
