Hey my name is Danny I'm 22, I study linguistics and zoology and I'm a new member though I've used tamas for awhile. My first was an old p1v1 which I unfortunately gave to a friend but since then I have two vintages, angelgotch and mori no. I also have an On! and three gen1 v2s and that pacman one.
currently trying to figure out how the v2s program works. I always liked the vintages and collecting shells.

Welcome ^^ By gen1 v2 do you mean the P2 (with Mimitchi, Zuccitchi, etc.) ? If you figure out how those work as far as character growth be sure to let us know, because the v2 programming eludes the community at this time. We seem to have solved the v1 programming and the rerelease programming (for the most part) but that v2 stuff is a complete mystery.

Hey Danny, welcome to TamaTalk. What are you playing currently?

oh by v2 i meant rerelease, I always thought both Ps were nearly the same?

currently I'm using a p1 rerelease

Hehe, welcome to the wild world of virtual pets!

V tamagotchis is actually short for Version, AKA the connection tamagotchis. So it runs all the way up through V5.5, if my memory is right.
The vintage style ones are called P1/P2, although with the remakes they've dubbed them Gen1 and Gen 2, but they're aligned with the old numbers (P2= Gen 1).
I'm pretty sure that's as complicated as it gets with the tama's and naming conventions, unless you spiral into the Japanese vs English versions 😅 Keitai= V3, meets=tamagotchi On etc. And even then, they're not exactly 1 for 1 matches in many instances.

I suppose you could use virtual pets in a linguistics project as a niche community and ways we interact. What got you into studying linguistics?

Oh OK, there are actually three sets of programming on the original P1 and P2, there's the original v1 programming that was used in the original P1 and the first wave of P2s (the ones with Pochitchi and Sekitoritchi), then they updated the programming to "v2" programming which was used in the wave 2 Japanese releases (with Nyatchi and Charitchi) and the English-language versions of the P2 (making the English-language 97 P1 and P2 actually different programming). Then the rereleases have their own programming, which is pretty much identical between the P1 and P2 in those.

Outside of differentiating between the programming types of the 97 vpets, like Bentobuff said usually we use "v1" "v2" etc to refer to the Connection releases.

As for the rerelease programming, Shenanook figured it out for the most part and posted results in this thread: https://www.tamatalk.com/threads/tamagotchi-p1-p2-evolution-guide.200023/

But there are a few holes, as illustrated by the ??? parts of this guide: http://thaao.net/tama/p2/?p=chara so if you wanna figure out those, that would be fun! And the results also haven't been double-checked by anyone else, so you could also do that as well.

(Also, I studied linguistics as well! Do you have a certain area you focus on? I was mostly interested in second language acquisition/pedagogy, as I studied for the sake of learning to teach foreign languages :) )

yeah I've seen that for connections but I also seen people using it to describe the rerelease but guess that isn't convention.

I saw the new stuff posted also so now I know it's updated.

I like phonetics and phonology, and then philology and "older/ancient" languages (so far I know latin classical Greek and old english)

That's fantastic. What language are you studying at present?
