Once, there was a widowed h34r: , Sam, and his young daughter , Elinor . Sam was intent on finding a mother for his child, and came across a beautiful :furawatchi: , Hannah who also had a daughter, , Kate .
Elinor was badly mistreated by her stepmum, and her only comfort was Kate , who could only speak to her when Hannah was not around.
Hannah made Elinor do all the chores, and beat her if she wasnt good enough at it. Sam never knew about it, because he was a merchant and not home often.
One day, during winter, Hannah made Elinor go out, and try and draw water from a pump. It had frozen, and she had to stand out there all night until it defrosted.
When she got back, her stepmother yelled at her, and reached behind her for a broom to beat her with. But she did not pick up a broom, she picked up an axe, and swung it at Elinor , not realising it was an axe until Elinors's head was on the floor.
She was terrified, and baked the body into a pie, forcing Kate to bury the bones in a cave.
When Sam got home, she gave him the pie for dinner, and told him that Elinor had run away to join the circus.
A few weeks later, a cobbler was making shoes when a voice came down the chimmeny:
"Me mummy killed me
Me daddy ate me
My poor sister she buried the bones
But i grew and i grew
To a bonny white dove"
The cobbler realised it was Elinor, and asked her what she wanted. "The pair of primrose shoes in the window" She said. He gave her the shoes, and wished her well.
A watchmaker was sitting in his workshop and heard a voice down the chimmeny:
"Me mummy killed me
Me daddy ate me
My poor sister she buried the bones
But i grew and i grew
To a bonny white dove"
The watchmaker realised it was Elinor, and asked her what she wanted. "The gold watch in the window" She said. He gave her the watch, and wished her well.
A blacksmith was making an anvil when he heard a voice down the chimmeny:
"Me mummy killed me
Me daddy ate me
My poor sister she buried the bones
But i grew and i grew
To a bonny white dove"
The blacksmith realised it was Elinor, and asked her what she wanted. "The anvil you have made" She said. He gave her the anvil, and wished her well.
She flew home and cried down the chimmeny:
"Father, Father, I forgive you" and she dropped the watch down the chimmeny.
"Sister sister, I forgive you" and she dropped the shoes
Hannah ran to the fireplace and cried "What have you got for me??"
Then Elinor dropped the anvil on Hannah's head
