The summer heat beamed down on the shed just outside the classroom, while Gina and Beth stood in line, waiting for their ice cream. EOGs had just ended, and Gina, Beth and Luke sat outside on the sidewalk next to the school, eating a delicious sundae while the other groups of friends sat in random circles atop patches of grass and dirt. Gina sat next to Beth, while Beth sat extra-close to Luke, her new boyfriend.
"Pictochat?" Gina whispered, their secret codename for "I need to tell you something."
"Pictochat." Beth comfirmed, her secret reply for "Okay. What is it?"
Both the girls whipped out their Nintendos and began typing:
Gina: Hey! i wuz wondrin, do u like Luke?
Beth: Ya hes my boyfriend
Gina: Knew that lol But thers a bit of a problem with that..
Beth: What?
Gina: I kind of.. um..
Beth: What is it?
Gina:... like him too..
Beth: WHAT?? No way!
Gina:...
Beth: Its ok. Ill break up with him right now if u want me too..
Gina: No plz dont! I would hate to do that to you. Promise not to tell?
Beth: Okay
Gina and Beth both burned on the inside after that conversation, but they pretended not to mind it. Luke asked later if Gina had really said that she liked him, but Beth said no. They sat back down on the grass.
A month had passed since that awful conversation, and both Beth and Gina pretended to forget, although they hardly ever spoke to each other again. School had already let out, and ever since the last bell rang, Gina missed Luke more than ever. She was sitting at home thinking about him, when her phone beeped. Gina sighed and nearly scowled, "Beth."
Gina was right, it was a text from Beth. Gina opened up her phone to reveal the message.
"Hey. Sry i didnt tell u earlier, but i broke up with Luke yesterday to save our friendship."
She began to cry. Beth really did love her enough to let him go. She was a true friend, but after that conversation, Gina and Beth had really not been friends. Why did she hate her so much when she let him go?
She texted Beth back, saying
"I am so sorry about that. I should have never told you. We could still be friends."
She recieved another text saying
"Who said we ever stopped being friends?"
