Changing the Type of Music that the Music Star Plays

My Tamagotchis have been playing the same kind of music for the past few generations (and I always change the instrument when they leave). So is there some kind of trick to change the kind of music they play? Do the members of it's band need to have different instruments, or is it just random? (I've really been wanting them to play pop music so I hope there is some kind of trick. )

I think it depends on the instruments. If not, then it probably generates random genres. Maybe try out new instrument combos?
