Chapter 1
Usagi Kinachi was your average girl. She was always laughing, playing and running. That is, until her parents were gone. When Usagi was 8, her father died in an accident, leaving her and her mother alone. Usagi had been thinking at the funeral about how she knew her papa would die.
“Mama! It’s raining! Make it stop so we can play outside in the park!” 4-year-old Usagi cried to her mother. “Usa, I can’t stop the rain from falling!” her mother giggled. “But, why?” Usagi asked. “When something happens, it will eventually end by itself, in a good way or a bad way. It might end up too wet to play, or all the rain could dry up.”
The two of them spent 2 years together laughing and playing. They were always in happy, cheerful moods. But one day, in mid-summer, they were having a picnic together and Usagi asked the question that messed her life up. “Mama, did Papa die because you couldn’t stop him? Are you really happy with just the two of us together?”
Her mother stood up and grabbed Usagi. “What kind of stupid question is that?” she screamed, “Gimme a break, Usa! Who do you think I’m doing all this work for? I slave over hot stoves making you dinners and you ask me smart aleck questions!” She threw Usagi to the ground and ran into the house.
When Usagi was fourteen, coming home from her last day of middle school, she was feeling dizzy and just collapsed. When she awoke, she had found out that her cousin, Kyon, had seen her pass out and his parents drove her to the hospital, because they knew her mother probably wouldn’t care.
As she awoke, Usa’s vision blurred until it was normal. She found herself lying in a hospital bed. “W-where a-am I? Wh-what happened?” Usa asked. Her aunt Satsuki patted her head. “It’s okay! You just passed out because you weren’t eating enough and you were working too hard.” She said calmly. Usa squinted. “W-who are you?” Satsuki laughed. “Oh, you must know me as Kyon-kichi’s step mother!” she giggled, “I’ll go inform your mother about what happened!”
Usa tugged at the IV. “Stop! I want to go home!” she cried, “Leave me and mama alone! Let me go home! I’m fine!” Satsuki turned as she heard something. “It’s okay, Usagi-chan, you don’t have to come home anymore! I don’t need you anymore! Go somewhere far away from me!” Usagi just froze stiffly as she realized those cold words had come from her mother. “M-mama? Why? No, don’t go!” Usa sobbed. “Please stop mama! I’m sorry! Mama!”
Satsuki hugged Usa. “Don’t worry, Usa-chan!” she comforted, “I’ll always love you! No matter what happens! You can come live with us!” Usa just shook her head. “I-it’s okay…I can live by myself, I have a job…” Satsuki frowned and lifted herself off of the bed. “No matter what, Usa, you can always come to me!” Usa nodded, “Thank you Satsuki-san!”
The wind blew and Usagi felt a shiver up her spine. “Well, I guess it’s time for school Mr.Kitty!” Usagi cooed to the kitten she had been taking care of. Mr.Kitty let out a small meow. Usa yawned and grabbed her school bag. “Let’s go!” Usa’s best friend, Atari Satomi, rode on her bike as Usa raced Mr.Kitty to school. They arrived at Shonosuke high school.
Mr.Kitty cuddled up in Usa’s book bag. He snored loudly. Usa just poked him when the teacher began writing on the board. “Mr.Kitty! Not so loud!” The teacher spun around. “Something wrong, Kinachi-san?” she asked, eyebrow raised. “N-no problem, Mio-sensei!” Mio Kudachi grinned. “Then let’s continue with our lesson!” she grinned, spinning to face the board again.
When class had finally ended, Usa rushed out the door to get home. Atari closely followed behind. “Usa! Do you have to walk so fast?” Usagi just giggled as she dumped lazy Mr.Kitty out of her bag. He hissed and bit her. “Fine! No treats for you today, you naughty boy!”
As they arrived to their small cabin by the lake, Usa began to worry. “Tari, how long do you think we’ll be here? You know, before our home gets washed away or something?” She asked in a quivering voice. Atari just shrugged and replied, “I don’t know. Nothing has happened for the past few months.” Usa just stared at her feet and trembled. “Well, we’ve only been living here since May. It’s only September!”
Atari just threw back her head and yawned loudly. “Gimme a break, Usa!” she grumbled. Usa remembered how her mother had screamed, “Gimme a break!” and she just walked into her bedroom, wishing that she could go live with her mother again. Tears stung her eyes. “I should have never asked that stupid question! It’s all my fault mama hates me…it’s all my fault!!!”
Usagi fell asleep and dreamt of the days when she and her mama would happily play together and nobody could separate them. “Mama! I wanna play a game! Let’s play! Let’s play!” Usagi chanted. “All right, do you want to play princess again?” her mother calmly asked. “Yeah!” Usa cheered. “Well, too bad! The princess is left all alone in the streets because her mama hates her!” Usa’s mom replied. “No mama! Don’t leave me alone! Don’t leave!”
“Don’t leave! I still love you! Come back, mama!” Usa begged in her sleep. She was awoken by Atari who giggled and said, “Not only do you snore, but you talk in your sleep too!” Usa checked her clothes and saw that she had actually fallen asleep in her school uniform, not her pyjamas. Usa finally grinned and thought, ‘I’m going to make mama love me again, no matter what it takes!’
Since Atari had to stop and run an errand, Usagi was alone as she walked to school that day. She was thinking about her goal. ‘Mama doesn’t live in Tokyo any more, so I have to figure out where she li-’ She paused when she bumped into Akihiro, the most popular guy in school that practically every girl had a crush on.
“Kinachi-san! Are you all right?” he asked, holding out his hand to her. Usa blushed, ‘I can’t believe it! Akihiro Sasaki, the most popular boy in Shonosuke High School, is offering his hand to me! Me! The girl who lives in a cabin!' Usagi shook her head and replied, “Y-yes, I’m okay Sasaki-san!” she whimpered.
The two walked to school together and Usa was so embarrassed, she couldn’t even speak. Her face was hot and red. ‘What would he say if he ever found out I lived by myself in a cabin with Tari? No way I can tell HIM! He’d probably laugh. No! He’s too nice for that!’ She watched her feet moving along the pavement. ‘If I’ve learned anything, it’s that walking and thinking can be dangerous!'
