Can't buy ring in Tamagotchi M!x?

I sent my tama to the store to buy a ring and it wouldn't let me. The store clerk said something about happiness? I didn't have enough time to read all of it. I tried a few more times and still no luck. The weird thing is that my other tama was able to buy a ring even though the circumstances are exactly the same. No other tamas known but each other, max friendship, same happiness level, etc. What's going on?

I have four thousand gotchi points and my tama was an adult. I married him to my girl tama using the ring I bought on the other tamagotchi. Hopefully that fixed it.
