Yes, I have found out about the upcoming Nintendo 3DS. The next DS handheld is supposed to have a 3D display, and it should come out between April 2010 - March 2011 (The upcoming fiscal year), at least in Japan. Here's a link to an article detailing this discovery:

https://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/24/technology/24nintendo.html?ref=technology

(I chose the New York Times article because I thought it would be safest to put here on TamaTalk.)

Post your comments here! :furawatchi:

Thank you so much for telling me in that other forum! =D I was just about to go to GameStop ASAP and now that this official info's out, I'm not getting that XL. :furawatchi: Oh, and since some of the comments on Kotaku have swear words and stuff, I'm just gonna copy'n'paste other info about it that the NYT may not have put.

At E3, Nintendo will be introducing new hardware, the Nintendo 3DS.

In an official release, Nintendo describes the portable as allowing games to be "enjoyed with 3D effects without the need for any special glasses". It is not yet known how the 3D effects will work, but it is possible that it could work like this Japan-only DSiWare game.

According to Nintendo, the product will go on sale between April 2010 and March 2011.

The Nintendo 3DS will succeeded the Nintendo DS series and will have backward compatibility for Nintendo DS and DSi games. It is important to stress that the Nintendo 3DS is a new hardware series.

In early January, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata gave an interview with Japan's second largest newspaper The Asahi Shimbun in which he apparently said the Nintendo DS successor will have "highly detailed graphics, and it will be necessary to have a sensor with the ability to read the movements of people playing".

Nintendo of America later told Kotaku that the Asahi Shimbun had "misinterpreted" Iwata's remarks. "Mr. Iwata did not make any comments regarding the functions of Nintendo's future hardware systems," Charlie Scibetta, Nintendo of America's senior director of corporate communications told Kotaku. "The answer to the reporter's question was misinterpreted."

The Asahi Shimbun stands by its reporting and issued a statement to Kotaku Japan that read: "The article quoted Nintendo President Satoru Iwata's comment accurately." The actual quote in the article is a fragment of a longer sentence.

At a Nintendo quarterly Q&A, the exec addressed the issue with the Asahi Shimbun, asserting that the reporter stated, "The graphics for the next DS will be highly detailed and it will contain a motion sensor, right?" Iwata claims he then replied, "Those things are naturally being required. But do you think it would sell with just that?" Iwata emphasized that this last part was left completely out.

It appears that the extra element Nintendo believed was necessary to really sell the DS successor is 3D.

Regarding 3D, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has previously stated that Nintendo would need to look into the "possible health effects" of playing video games in 3D for prolonged periods of time.

I know it has backwards compatibility, but I REALLY hope they don't make the regular DS games obsolete with upgrades like how there's no GBA slot from the DSi forwards (I didn't really care, but I'm not a GBA player).

^Yeah, i don't want to upgrade my DS unless it has a GBA slot, because that's the only way I have to play GBA games, plus, without the double slot feature you can't do certain things, like migrate pokemon, or play, say, guitar hero (not that i want that game for DS, but if someone did they would need the double slot).

The people who just bought the DSi got screwed over. Why are they releasing a new system so soon? Nintendo should have waited.

Well, I'm glad I didn't sell my DS Lite yet. =) If the 3DS is released this year, it'll probably be in Japan first and other countries next year. So that way, it's perfectly okay if I blow over $100 to go to a concert of my favorite bands and get a VIP pass. :furawatchi: REALLY hoping I can go now.

That's just what Nintendo does with their hand held consoles. They screw their customers.

They did it with the Game Boy too.

First there was Gameboy, then Gameboy Color, then Gameboy Pocket about a year-ish later, and then soon after that they started the Gameboy Advance line.

I think there was only about a year and a half between the release of the GBA SP and the first DS, and maybe two years between DS and DS Lite.

It's just the way Nintendo does it. They know that kids will run up to their parents begging for the next best thing, and the majority of parents will give in, especially since you can trade in the old one and get money off the new one.

Hm, if this 3DS is that revolutionized, it's gotta cost more than the DSi XL, don't ya think? =/ Probably over $200 like PSPGo area or something...

But since they say it'll be released this fiscal year, it almost definitely means in Japan first. So if it was released as late as March 2011, say it'll be 5 or 6 months later for Europe and North America. So that'd be in the fall of 2011 for most of us here, right?

Yeah...I think I can scrape up the cash by then, hahaha.
