Hello!

So, as the title suggests, I am a returning tamagotchi lover!

I used to have an abundance of the little virtual pets (around 22 I believe) but unfortunately when I moved house they ended up disappearing </3

I haven't played with any virtual pet for around 6 or 7 years now so I know I have a lot to catch up on.

I've just bought Tamagotchi Friends & I'm hoping this will set me on the right track.

My question to you lot is - do you have any advice for me regarding which tamas are worth it and which ones aren't? I can understand a lot of it is personal choice but any insight will help. I'm coming from the V6 days so I have never experienced any of the coloured tamas - plus the prices have peaked loads. It's a lot of money to spend on something that might not be worth it.

Also, are most of the modern tamagotchis japanese? are there any english versions of these models?

I don't speak a word of japanese so that wouldn't be ideal!

To summarise, I just really want your opinions on what you like and why! This will help give me a better understanding of where I want to go in the future regarding tamagotchis.

Thank you :D

Here, I wrote this condensed summary in another topic about some of the different English released Tamagotchis.

Vintage Era:

From my experience with the vintage era (Anglegotchi and P2), the versions offered are unique in their themes (themes often playing a big part in the gameplay) and have large pixels but have limited animations and games (usually just one only). They can be low maintenance once in adulthood, but they are programmed to get needier in old age and eventually die. Additionally, characters are limited but are often well known enough that they have a nostalgic appeal, as well as fitting nicely in their themes.

Connection Era:

Introduces allot more features and has a mix of new and old characters, but with a generally shorter life span due to evolving into the oldie characters. The early connections (V1-V3) have more characters from the vintage era, which works well in maintaining a nostalgic appeal but give a broader interaction. V1 doesn't have a shop while the V2 and V3 do. The later connections (V4, V4.5) have less vintage characters and the formula is a bit more regular due to the addition of stats, and also their is the job function which provides extra minigames.

V5 and V5.5 break from the formula by allowing the user to raise three Tamagotchis at once and keep them permanently as their is no oldie stage. Once the tamagotchis become adults, they can activate the convenient dating channel function to marry. I've only experienced the V5, and I didn't like it that much because shop selection stays the same, you can only play games with one of the siblings, the minigames are limited (only 4), and raising three at once just seems to go through the characters awful fast. One big plus to the connection era is that, with the exception of the V.5-6, you can connect all versions together, as well as some of the Japanese ones too!
I've seen quite allot of recommendations for the V4 and V4.5, and I would recommend them. I really haven't settled on a favourite version, but I do like the unpredictability in the V3's formula (I only have a a V3, but I'm sure the V2 and V1 can be lumped in as well). I should also mention that these versions are likely less demanding than the V6.

Yes, all of the modern Tamagotchis are in Japanese; however, someone called My. Blinky has released an English patch of them so, with the right device, the Tamagotchi can be converted into English. Besides that, there are some versions being sold with an already installed English patch, but as far I know only the idL actually has been officially released in English. I don't have any of the colour versions, but I hear that they have quite allot of content (but it depends on the version). The only ones I have my eye on is the P's and a M!X version (two are already released but a third is in the works), and possibly a Plus Colour.

Thank you so much for this detailed reply!

I have to say I've always had a soft spot for the V4/V4.5!

I will definitely be keeping an eye out for the english idL in the future & it's really good to know they have english patches too.

New tamagotchis are released more frequently in Japan, so lots of new ones are in Japanese. It's really actually not that difficult to understand, though! I don't speak any Japanese, but it's easy to understand if you're familiar with how tamagotchis work. As mentioned above, English patches are available if you want them, and the English iD L is a great option for an LCD screen tamagotchi in English with no patching required!

I guess I'll have to start practicing some Japanese lol!

I'm quite familiar with Tamagotchis but as I mentioned in my post, the last Tamas I owned were the V5/V6 - I'm not too sure how much has changed since then but I'm assuming the basics still remain.

I have a Tamagotchi Friends on the way so I'll see how I get along with that and if I feel lie venturing out then I will. c:

Thank you for you reply!
