You know how when Nook gives you a part-time job when you finish he gives you 19,800 Bells? Well I had an idea so I made a new resident ("Alice") and then like normal Nook offered her a job. I haven't finished the job yet, but what if he gives me 19,800 Bells off my mortgage, then I delete the new resident, make a new one and repeat it until I pay off the bill? Pretty genius, eh?

Well...Nook's only going to take off 1,400 bells each time, which would be like 14 pieces of your local fruit. 1,400 bells isn't actually that much. In my opinion, I think it's faster to sell stuff you don't want and sell fruits, shells, bugs and fossils. Actually, by selling coconuts (from my 10-tree coconut orchard), some seashells, a few flowers, and a few unusual bugs along with a couple of fossils (that the museum already had) I earned 30,000 and deposited at the town hall for my mortgage (I have like 300something,000 more to go. I just got the expansion that added a second floor to my house). Basically, I'm saying I find it faster to earn bells by selling stuff.
