I bought a japanese tama from 1996 and it came with some old batteries in it. They hadn’t leaked very much and the contacts were clean so all seemed well. put some new batteries in (energizer 357’s because that seems to matter in some way?). It starts right up and asks for the time. The only problem is that the screen goes blank after a couple seconds of not doing anything. it comes back when you press a button and it’s still going while the screen is blank. you can see it when you tilt it up. From the sounds of it, it seems like it thinks the batteries are low or almost dead and is conserving power, but that doesn’t make much sense. I bought another one with it and it works just fine with these batteries.

If the batteries are brand new, I'd suggest maybe cleaning the battery contacts anyway, since it sounds like the previous batteries exploded a bit?
I've had a tama of mine do a similar thing, tho in my case it was that the batteries were practically dead. So my best guess is that something is interfering with the connection between the contacts and the batteries? So if a good cleaning doesn't do it, I'm unsure what else it could be. ^^;; Sorry to not be a huge help!

I figured out what the problem was! Turns out the batteries weren’t seating correctly when i closed the back up. I actually snapped one of the clips while trying to put it back on :( After I decided to give up on finding smaller batteries locally, as i thought someone had maybe tried opening the tama and fixing it for some reason and messed it up, i got the batteries just right and it closed right up really easy! So if anyone sees this and has a similar problem with the batteries, make sure they’re sitting properly inside the holes!
