Sorry, but can you be a little more specific about the "better character"? Do you mean cuter ones, ones that do better in games, etc.

Those aren't the only options. I've bought the chest a few times and there's good and bad - once, it turned my tama into an old guy (can't remember the official name for it) and then it gave me 3000 gp once. =) It just depends on your luck.

I bought the genie lamp and used it... but nothing came out of the smoke and the lamp vanished from my inventory/items list. =\
