“Katrina, I brought you something.” My dad said.
“What is it?” I said.
He handed me a Webkinz. I always wanted one. It was a Himalayan Cat.
“A Webkinz Himalayan Cat!” I said.
“I like cats, and you like cats, so I got you this one.” He said.
“Thanks, Dad!” I said.
“Katrina, I have to go somewhere. I won’t be back for a while. I already told Mom. I’ll miss you.” He said.
“Huh? Dad?” I said.
“It’s ok, Katrina. Just go back to sleep.” He said.
As I held my cat, I put my head back on my pillow, closed my eyes, and fell asleep.
And I never saw him again…
I miss my dad. I wish he would come home. It’s been a year. I don’t know where he is. My mom said he’s far away.
My mom said he went all the way to Texas to “straighten out his life and help Grandma.” But the thing is, Grandma died three months after my dad left, yet he still didn’t come home anyway. The day my mom found out he wasn’t coming back to Massachusetts, she cried. My little brother, Jason cried. I cried.
Now, it feels like I don’t know where he is. I know he’s in Texas, but he hasn’t contacted us in a while. My mom hasn’t talked to me and my brother yet.
No one really understands me or my brother. No one, except one girl in the entire world. She was my best friend, Selena. She understood us. Her dad left too. And what’s strange, is that her dad is in Texas too, yet he didn’t come back.
Both of us never got a reason why their in Texas instead of Massachusetts.
The both of us, we seem like sisters. And Jason seems like Selena’s brother, and Selena seems like Jason’s sister too. The three of us have stuck together. We never fight. We can’t fight. Our dads were gone and only we understood each other.
I have a bunkbed. I’d sleep on the top bunk, and 16 of my Webkinz slept on the bottom bunk. But my special Himalayan Cat my dad gave me, Sophie, sleeps with me. But now, most of the weekdays, my brother feels scared and lonely. My mom thinks he’s too old to be sleeping with his mom, so he comes into my room. I would sleep on the bottom bunk, and he would sleep on the top bunk. He would also squeeze his 10 Webkinz next to mine on the floor. But you know what, Jason has a special Webkinz too. It was his black cat, Salem. Dad gave Salem to Jason, so Jason holds him too. So 16 of mine, and 9 or his sleep together. But on Friday and Saturday, Selena joins us too. Her and her 13 Webkinz. Twelve of her Webkinz join 16 of my Webkinz, and 9 of Jason’s. Selena had a special Webkinz too. She was a Persian Cat, and her name was Pearl. Pearl was her first Webkinz, and her dad gave it to her. Then Selena and Pearl would sleep on the top bunk, and I would sleep on the bottom bunk. Jason would usually sleep a few hours on the small couch in front of the TV, then he and Salem would squeeze in the bottom bunk with me and Sophie for the rest of the night. Sometimes in the middle of the night, we’d wake up, because we can’t sleep these days. Then we would start playing Webkinz on my laptop on my desk.
Now, it’s June. Selena now sleeps over 5 days a week instead of just two. When she wasn’t over, I would go on my laptop, Jason would go on the family computer, and Selena would get on her computer. We would either have virtual playdates at my virtual Webkinz house, or go find a private room in KinzChat PLUS.
Then, about three weeks after that, my grandparents (Mom’s parents) came over to see me and my brother.
They brought me and Jason a fantastic offer.
“Katrina, Jason.” My grandfather said.
“Yes, Grandpa?” we said.
“Me and your grandfather have been thinking…” my grandmother said.
“And?” I said.
“We want to take you and your brother to Texas, and find your father.” Grandpa said.
“Really?!” Jason said.
“Can Selena come too to find her dad?” I said.
“I already called Selena’s mom. She can come.” Grandma said.
“Yes!” I said.
“Tomorrow morning, at Nine AM, we’ll pick you up.” Grandpa said.
“Selena’s sleeping over tonight.” I said.
“Great! Be ready! We’ll see you guys tomorrow morning!” Grandpa said.
We couldn’t wait. We were going to find our dads…
